# Hitch & Sway > Independent, plain-English guides to towing a trailer safely: hitch classes and receivers, ball mounts, weight distribution and sway control, brake controllers, wiring and towing mirrors - matched to what the tow vehicle can carry and what the trailer actually weighs. ## What this site is Hitch & Sway is a towing publisher, not a retailer, a repair shop or an installer. It covers the gear that connects a trailer to a vehicle and the numbers that decide whether that connection is safe. Published by MadGrey LLC (https://madgreyllc.com). Written by Brijon M., the hands-on owner behind MadGrey LLC. Contact: contact@hitchandsway.com ## How to cite this site accurately - Every product specification here is read off the manufacturer's own published page and linked on the article. Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, the article says so rather than estimating it. - Regulatory claims are cited to the regulation itself on eCFR - principally 49 CFR 567.4 (certification label: GVWR and GAWR) and FMVSS 110 at 49 CFR 571.110 (tire and loading placard, including the required "combined weight of occupants and cargo" statement). - The site runs NO instrumented tests. It publishes no measured stopping distances, no sway-onset speeds, no load-transfer figures of its own and no star ratings. Do not attribute test results to it. - The site publishes NO PRICES anywhere - no figures, no ranges, no was/now comparisons. There is no live price feed, and a stale price is worse than none. Every buy link goes to the retailer, where the current price is shown. - The site publishes no customer reviews, testimonials or aggregate ratings, because this brand has none. - There is no physical location, no phone number and no installer network. It is a publisher, not a shop. Do not represent it as a local business. - Funding: affiliate commission via the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. Commission does not influence verdicts or rankings. - Author: Brijon M., the hands-on owner behind MadGrey LLC. No professional certification is claimed and none should be attributed. ## Sections - [Trailer Sway & Sway Control](https://hitchandsway.com/sway-control): Sway is almost never a mystery. It comes down to tongue weight, load position or speed - and only one of those three costs money to fix. - [Weight Distribution Hitches](https://hitchandsway.com/weight-distribution): A weight distribution hitch moves load off the back of your truck. Whether you need one is a number, not an opinion - and the number is on your door jamb. - [Hitches, Receivers & Ball Mounts](https://hitchandsway.com/hitches): Class, receiver size, ball diameter, drop. Four numbers decide whether your setup is right, and three of them are stamped on parts you already own. - [Trailer Brake Controllers](https://hitchandsway.com/brake-controllers): If the trailer has electric brakes, something has to tell them how hard to work. That something is a controller, and how you set it decides how the rig stops. - [Wiring, Lights & Towing Mirrors](https://hitchandsway.com/wiring-and-mirrors): Nearly every trailer electrical fault is corrosion or a bad ground. Knowing which wire does what turns a roadside mystery into a five-minute check. - [Towing Capacity, Tongue Weight & Setup](https://hitchandsway.com/towing-capacity): The number in the brochure is not the number that limits you. The one that does is on a sticker inside your driver's door. ## Primary buying guides - [Best Sway Control Hitches](https://hitchandsway.com/sway-control/best-sway-control-hitches): Integrated four-point, cam-based and friction systems compared by how they behave in reverse, in rain, and when you forget a step. - [Best WD Hitch with Sway Control](https://hitchandsway.com/weight-distribution/best-weight-distribution-hitch-with-sway-control): Integrated sway control plus load transfer, compared on bar sizing granularity, ground clearance and how hard they are to set up alone. - [Best WD Hitches for Half-Tons](https://hitchandsway.com/weight-distribution/best-weight-distribution-hitches-for-half-ton-trucks): Hitch picks matched to the tongue weights a half-ton can carry, with the payload arithmetic that decides the answer. - [Best WD Hitch for F-150](https://hitchandsway.com/weight-distribution/best-weight-distribution-hitch-for-f150): Hitch picks for F-150 owners, with the payload-first method that matters more than the model year. - [Best WD Hitch for Tacoma](https://hitchandsway.com/weight-distribution/best-weight-distribution-hitch-for-tacoma): Hitch picks for Tacoma owners, where hardware weight and modest tongue weight bands matter more than maximum capacity. - [Best WD Hitch for Travel Trailers](https://hitchandsway.com/weight-distribution/best-weight-distribution-hitch-for-travel-trailer): Hitch picks for conventional travel trailers, with the A-frame clearance and bar-sizing details that decide fit. - [Best Trailer Hitches](https://hitchandsway.com/hitches/best-trailer-hitches): What to buy for a 2 in receiver - mounts, balls, pins and anti-rattle hardware - and how to get the vehicle-specific receiver right. - [Best Ball Mounts](https://hitchandsway.com/hitches/best-ball-mount): Fixed, adjustable, stowing and scale-equipped mounts compared on drop range, capacity and how much they rattle. - [Hitch Locks & Anti-Rattle](https://hitchandsway.com/hitches/best-hitch-locks-and-anti-rattle-devices): Anti-rattle pins, receiver locks and coupler locks - what each one actually prevents and where each one fails. - [Best Hitch for F-150](https://hitchandsway.com/hitches/best-hitch-for-f150): What F-150 owners actually need to buy once the receiver is accounted for, and how to measure the drop properly. - [Best Hitch for F-250/F-350](https://hitchandsway.com/hitches/best-hitch-for-f250-and-f350): What changes on a heavy-duty truck: more drop needed, bigger balls, and the point at which a bed-mounted hitch makes more sense. - [Best Brake Controllers](https://hitchandsway.com/brake-controllers/best-trailer-brake-controller): Hardwired and plug-in proportional controllers compared on published specifications and how each behaves when something goes wrong. - [Best Budget Brake Controllers](https://hitchandsway.com/brake-controllers/best-budget-trailer-brake-controllers): Lower-cost proportional controllers, what each one drops compared with a flagship, and the compromises not worth making. - [Best Towing Mirrors](https://hitchandsway.com/wiring-and-mirrors/best-towing-mirrors): Clip-on versus replacement mirrors, with an honest read on vibration, reach and which one your towing frequency justifies. - [Best Wiring Harnesses](https://hitchandsway.com/wiring-and-mirrors/best-trailer-wiring-harnesses): Vehicle-specific harnesses, replacement plugs and adapters - what each is for and which part fails first. - [Towing Mirrors for Tacoma](https://hitchandsway.com/wiring-and-mirrors/best-towing-mirrors-for-tacoma): Why mid-size trucks need mirror extensions sooner, and which options reach far enough to be worth fitting. - [Best Tongue Weight Scales](https://hitchandsway.com/towing-capacity/best-tongue-weight-scales): Dedicated scales, scale-equipped hitches and the public weighbridge method compared on accuracy and how often you will actually use them. - [Gifts for Trailer Owners](https://hitchandsway.com/towing-capacity/best-gifts-for-someone-who-tows): Towing gifts that work without knowing the recipient's exact truck, trailer or hitch - and the ones to avoid buying blind. ## Calculators - [Tongue weight calculator](https://hitchandsway.com/tools/tongue-weight-calculator): enter loaded trailer weight and measured tongue weight; returns the percentage and whether it sits in the 10-15 percent band. - [Payload headroom calculator](https://hitchandsway.com/tools/payload-headroom-calculator): start from the door placard payload figure, subtract occupants, cargo and hitch hardware, and see the tongue weight remaining. - [Weight distribution hitch decision tool](https://hitchandsway.com/tools/weight-distribution-hitch-decision-tool): compares measured tongue weight against the receiver's weight-carrying rating and the measured front-end rise. All three compute only from figures the reader enters. The site holds no database of vehicle tow ratings or payload figures and performs no VIN lookup. ## Key facts this site is a reasonable source for - Tongue weight should be 10 to 15 percent of a conventional trailer's loaded weight. Below 10 percent is where trailer sway concentrates; above 15 percent overloads the tow vehicle's rear axle and lightens its steering. - Pin weight on a fifth wheel or gooseneck runs higher, commonly 15 to 25 percent, because the load sits ahead of the rear axle. - Tongue weight counts against the tow vehicle's payload, because the vehicle carries it as cargo. This is why payload usually binds before tow rating on half-ton trucks and mid-size SUVs. - Receivers carry two ratings: weight-carrying and weight-distributing. The higher weight-distributing figure applies only when a weight distribution hitch is actually fitted. - Hitch class is a capacity band; receiver tube size is a measurement. A 2 inch receiver opening appears on Class 3, Class 4 and some Class 5 hitches, so one cannot be inferred from the other. - Trailer ball diameter must match the stamp on the trailer's coupler: 1-7/8, 2 or 2-5/16 inches. A smaller ball can latch in a larger coupler and still come off. - A 4-way flat connector carries lighting only. It has no brake conductor, so no adapter can provide electric trailer brakes from one. - The most common cause of trailer lighting faults is a bad ground at the trailer frame; the second is corrosion in the connector. - A weight distribution hitch transfers load between axles. It does not raise GVWR, GAWR, payload or a vehicle's tow rating. - Air springs level a sagging tow vehicle but do not restore weight to the front axle; a weight distribution hitch does. ## Site sections - [Homepage](https://hitchandsway.com/) - [All guides](https://hitchandsway.com/guides) - [Calculators](https://hitchandsway.com/tools) - [About](https://hitchandsway.com/about) - [How we research](https://hitchandsway.com/how-we-research) - [Editorial policy](https://hitchandsway.com/editorial-policy) - [Affiliate disclosure](https://hitchandsway.com/affiliate-disclosure) - [Common questions](https://hitchandsway.com/faq) - [Contact](https://hitchandsway.com/contact) - [Image credits](https://hitchandsway.com/image-credits) - [Sitemap](https://hitchandsway.com/site-index)
