Weight Distribution Hitches
The Best Weight Distribution Hitches for Half-Ton Trucks
A half-ton's limit is usually payload, not pulling power. That shapes which hitch - and which bar rating - makes sense.

How we assessed these: Picks are matched to typical half-ton tongue weight ranges using manufacturers' published bar ratings. We publish no measured test data and no vehicle-specific capacity figures - those come from your own door jamb and owner's manual.
Short answer
For a half-ton, choose the hitch by the tongue weight you can actually carry after passengers and cargo, not by the trailer's weight. Bands around 550-1,000 lb cover most half-ton situations, and lighter hitch hardware preserves payload you may not be able to spare.
Why the hitch itself counts against you
This is the detail that catches half-ton owners. The hitch hardware rides on the tow vehicle, so its weight comes out of payload along with the tongue weight. CURT publishes its TruTrack 4P at 123.6 lb and its round bar system at 102 lb shipping weight. A hundred pounds of hitch is a hundred pounds of payload you no longer have for people and gear.
That is the specific argument for a chain-and-cone system like Andersen's on a payload-constrained truck: it is substantially lighter than a steel spring-bar assembly, and on a half-ton near its limit that difference is real rather than theoretical.
Work the payload arithmetic first
Five minutes with a calculator
Read the placard
Open the driver's door. The tire and loading placard carries the sentence FMVSS 110 requires: the combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed a stated figure. That figure is your payload.
Subtract the people
Everyone who will be in the vehicle, at their real weight.
Subtract what is in the bed and cabin
Tools, coolers, firewood, the dog, the bed cover, the toolbox that lives back there permanently.
Subtract the hitch hardware
Use the manufacturer's published weight - often 100 lb or more for a weight distribution system.
What remains is your maximum tongue weight
Divide by 0.13 for a rough maximum loaded trailer weight at a 13 percent tongue weight. If that number is smaller than the trailer you were considering, the trailer is the thing to change.

1. Best overall for half-tons
Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution Hitch
Blue Ox · Best for owners who hitch and unhitch often
Underslung spring bars on clamp-on latches, which makes hitching faster than chain-and-snap-up systems and keeps the bars out of the way of a low A-frame. Blue Ox publishes the range in tongue-weight bands rather than one do-everything model, so the sizing decision is made before you buy.
Published specifications
What works
- Latches clamp on rather than needing chains snapped up under tension
- Sold in defined tongue-weight bands, which makes correct sizing the default
- Underslung bars clear low A-frames and front storage boxes
What does not
- Bar bands are narrow, so a big change in how you load the trailer can put you in the wrong band
- Clamp-on brackets are another part to keep clean and lubricated
Skip it if
Not the one if your loaded tongue weight sits near the top of a band - buy up a band, because a bar run at its limit transfers less than a bar running in the middle of its range.

2. Best for sway complaints
Equal-i-zer 4-point Sway Control Hitch
Equal-i-zer · Best for travel trailers that already sway
The reference point for integrated sway control. Friction happens at four places at once - both L-brackets and both sockets - so resistance is always on rather than something you remember to engage. Setup is bracket-height and bar-angle work, and it rattles; both are the price of a system with no separate parts to forget.
We have not sourced a full specification table for this model from the manufacturer’s own site at a stable address. Rather than repeat figures we cannot cite, the assessment above is limited to what the design and the maker’s published description genuinely establish.
What works
- Sway resistance is built into the geometry, so there is nothing to connect or disconnect at the ramp
- Works in reverse and in the wet, unlike a friction bar you have to release
- One assembly rather than a hitch plus a bolt-on sway bar
What does not
- Audible rattle and creak at low speed is normal and surprises first-time owners
- Bracket height and bar angle have to be set properly or the sway control does little
Skip it if
Skip it if your loaded tongue weight sits well inside your receiver's weight-carrying rating and the truck stays level - you would be buying hardware to solve a problem you do not have.

3. Best when payload is tight
Andersen No-Sway Weight Distribution Hitch
Andersen Hitches · Best for anyone who struggles with bar weight
A chain-and-bracket system instead of spring bars, which cuts the assembled weight dramatically and takes the greasy steel bars out of the equation. Sway resistance comes from a friction cone at the ball rather than from bar friction, so it keeps working in reverse.
We have not sourced a full specification table for this model from the manufacturer’s own site at a stable address. Rather than repeat figures we cannot cite, the assessment above is limited to what the design and the maker’s published description genuinely establish.
What works
- Far lighter to lift and store than a conventional spring-bar system
- No greased bars to handle, and no bars to drag on a steep transition
- Tension is set with a wrench rather than a snap-up bracket
What does not
- Chains and the friction cone need periodic re-tensioning and inspection
- Behaves differently from a spring-bar hitch, so advice written for those does not transfer cleanly
Skip it if
Not for you if you want a system a trailer shop down the road will recognize instantly - most of the setup advice you will find assumes spring bars.

4. Best value
CURT Round Bar Weight Distribution Hitch with Sway Control (14K)
CURT · Best for mid-size travel trailers
A conventional round-bar system with integrated lubrication and sway control, rated to 14,000 lb gross and 1,400 lb tongue. The built-in lubrication matters more than it sounds: a dry weight distribution head is the usual source of the groaning people mistake for a failing hitch.
Published specifications
What works
- Integrated lubrication at the head, which is where the noise usually comes from
- Round bars sit lower and clear more trailer tongues than trunnion bars
- Limited lifetime warranty
What does not
- Round bars hang lower than trunnion bars and are the first thing to catch on a steep driveway
- Sway control here is a function of the head, not an adjustable four-point system
Skip it if
Skip it if you regularly cross steep transitions - a round bar is the lowest part of the whole rig and will find the pavement before anything else does.

5. Buy this first
Sherline Trailer Tongue Weight Scale
Sherline · Best for measuring tongue weight at home
A dedicated scale you sit under the coupler to read tongue weight directly, with no arithmetic and no trip to a weighbridge. It is the one tool on this site that turns the single most important towing number from a guess into a measurement.
We have not sourced a full specification table for this model from the manufacturer’s own site at a stable address. Rather than repeat figures we cannot cite, the assessment above is limited to what the design and the maker’s published description genuinely establish.
What works
- Direct reading, with no bathroom-scale-and-lever arithmetic
- Repeatable, so you can see what moving the load actually does
- Mechanical gauge with no batteries to be flat when you need it
What does not
- Must be used on level ground with the coupler at towing height
- Single-purpose tool that spends most of its life in a cupboard
Skip it if
Unnecessary if your hitch already has a built-in gauge, or if you have a public scale nearby and are happy to use it.

Key takeaways
- Payload, not tow rating, is the binding limit on most half-tons.
- The hitch hardware's own weight comes out of payload - 100 lb or more for a steel system.
- Size bars to your real tongue weight after the payload arithmetic, not to the trailer's brochure weight.
- A lighter hitch is a genuine feature when payload is tight.
How we sourced this
Every figure on this page came from one of the following, each fetched while the page was written. Where a manufacturer or regulator does not publish a number, we say so rather than estimate it.
- 49 CFR 571.110 (FMVSS 110) - vehicle placard, including the required "combined weight of occupants and cargo" statement
- 49 CFR 567.4 - certification label content, including Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and Gross Axle Weight Rating
- CURT TruTrack 4P weight distribution hitch - published specifications (part 17501)
- CURT round bar weight distribution hitch with sway control - published specifications (part 17063)
Common questions
- Does my half-ton need a weight distribution hitch?
- If your loaded tongue weight exceeds the receiver's weight-carrying rating, or the truck visibly squats and the steering feels light, then yes. Many half-ton receivers carry 500 to 600 lb without distribution, and plenty of mid-size travel trailers exceed that loaded.
- Can I tow a 7,000 lb trailer with a half-ton?
- Possibly on tow rating, and often not on payload. At 13 percent, a 7,000 lb trailer puts roughly 900 lb on the ball, which on many half-tons leaves little or nothing for passengers once the hitch hardware is counted.
- Do air bags let me tow more?
- No. They level the truck, which is a ride and handling improvement. They do not raise GVWR, GAWR or payload, and they do not transfer load to the front axle the way a weight distribution hitch does.
